Special counsel indicts ex-first lady Kim Keon Hee, marking historic first trial for former presidential couple

A special counsel team on Friday indicted former First Lady Kim Keon Hee, wife of ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol, on charges of political fund violation, stock manipulation and bribery. This is the first time in Korean history than a former president’s spouse has been indicted while in custody, meaning that both Yoon and Kim now face trial simultaneously. Prosecutors allege that Kim received free opinion polls from a political broker prior to the 2022 presidential election in exchange for influencing party nominations. They also accuse her of financing the 2009-2012 stock manipulation scheme involving Deutsch Motors and of accepting luxury goods, including a diamond necklace and designer handbags, from the Unification Church via a shaman in return of favors. Kim was arrested on Aug. 12 after a court issued a detention warrant, citing concerns over the destruction of evidence. Since then, she has appeared before investigators five times, but has largely exercised her right to remain silent.
