The AI Alliance Forms Non-profit AI Lab and AI Technology & Advocacy Association to Scale Open-Source Innovation

New legal entities and boards intend to scale the AI Alliance's mission to support and perform open-source development, open research, education, and advocacy for AI globally.

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y., June 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the AI Alliance, a global collaboration of more than 180 organizations committed to AI open innovation, announced it has incorporated into two closely partnered non-profit entities: a 501(c)(3) open AI research and education lab and a 501(c)(6) AI open technology and advocacy association.

The AI Alliance will use the new non-profit organizations to scale the number and impact of its projects as well as undertake significant fundraising to support open research, education, advocacy, and open-source AI development.

The major focus areas of the AI Alliance are AI agents, safety and governance, open data sets and models, and evaluation and benchmarks. Member organizations are also working together to address the challenges and opportunities in applying AI in specific domains, such as manufacturing, scientific research, education, and health.

The research and education lab, a registered 501(c)(3) organization, will focus on managing and supporting scientific and open-source projects that enable open community experimentation and learning, leading to better, more capable, and accessible open-source and open data foundations for AI. The lab will be overseen by a board of directors.

Anthony Annunziata, Director of AI Open Innovation, IBM, will serve as a founding co-chair alongside a representative from Meta. Jose Plehn, Chief Executive Officer, BrightQuery; Greg Lindahl, Chief Technology Officer, Common Crawl; Rebecca Weiss, Executive Director, MLCommons; and a representative from ETHZurich will serve as board members.

The technology and advocacy association, a registered 501(c)(6), will focus on global engagement on open-source AI advocacy and policy, driving technology development, industry standards and best practices. It will work to ensure that open-source AI is well-supported, responsibly developed, and used in ways that provide broad economic benefits. The association will be overseen by a board of directors.

Anthony Annunziata, Director of AI Open Innovation, IBM, and a representative from Meta will serve as the founding co-chairs. Christopher Nguyen, Chief Executive Officer, Aitomatic, and Sean Hughes, Ecosystem Director, ServiceNow will serve as board members.

Both boards expect the number of board members to increase as AI Alliance membership and projects grow in order to represent global and organizational diversity.

The AI Alliance's program steering committee will continue to provide oversight and guidance on project strategy and progress. The steering committee is composed of representatives from 20 AI Alliance member organizations around the globe across industry, government, universities, and non-profits.
