Veterans minister nominee vows to beef up support for veterans, patriots

Veterans Minister nominee Kwon Oh-eul said Tuesday he will make efforts to strengthen state support for low-income veterans and patriots in an effort to address the "blind spot" in the compensation system. Kwon made the remarks during a parliamentary confirmation hearing as President Lee Jae Myung has vowed to provide proper compensation and honor for those who sacrificed themselves to protect the nation. "I will keep in mind the president's administrative philosophy that 'special compensations are given for special sacrifices made for the people,' and ensure that there is no blind spot in veterans' benefits, listening to even the small voices of the veterans' families," Kwon said during his opening remarks at the hearing. Kwon also pledged to come up with measures to boost respect for the patriots and their bereaved families, while stepping up medical systems to meet the needs of the aging veterans. The veterans minister nominee also said he would successfully host the event marking the 80th anniversary of Korean liberation from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule.
