Alley Cat Rescue Urges Worldwide Spay/Neuter to Stop Suffering of Millions of Stray Cats for World Animal Day

MOUNT RAINIER, Md., Sept. 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- With an estimated 400 million stray cats living on streets around the world, animal welfare organization Alley Cat Rescue (ACR) is calling for urgent global action on World Animal Day. Their message - spay and neuter your cats and, if you can, help fix at least one community cat in your neighborhood.

For decades, Alley Cat Rescue has worked to reduce cat overpopulation by advocating for spay/neuter and humane trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs.

"This is not just a local issue — it's a global emergency," said Louise Holton, Founder and President of Alley Cat Rescue. "Millions of cats suffer every day on the streets. If every cat caretaker, everywhere, took responsibility to spay or neuter their pet, and if each of us helped sterilize just one feral cat, we could prevent unimaginable suffering in the next generation of cats."

Uncontrolled cat populations impact communities in multiple ways:

  • Public health risks (spread of rabies and other zoonotic diseases in unneutered colonies), whereas in colonies that are sterilized rabies and other vaccines are provided.
  • Shelter overcrowding (millions of cats enter shelters each year, and too many are euthanized due to lack of space).

Research shows that nonlethal sterilization programs not only reduce stray populations humanely over time, but are also less costly than euthanasia.

Call to Action - Alley Cat Rescue is urging:

  • Cat owners: Spay or neuter your pets without delay.
  • Communities: Support or volunteer with local spay/neuter and TNR programs.

Global citizens: Help at least one stray cat near your home — every surgery counts.
