Leading Local Mental Health Provider Aims to Debunk Common Misconceptions And Spark Informed Conversations

WASHINGTON, May 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, Columbia Mental Health (formerly known as Columbia Associates), a group of local outpatient mental health care clinics deeply rooted in the Washington DC Metro area for more than 30 years, is proud to launch "Myths vs. Facts" — a new public education campaign designed to confront and correct the many misconceptions that often prevent people from getting the care they need. As the organization rolls out its new name and branding, this initiative reflects Columbia Mental Health's broader mission to create a more informed and supportive mental health landscape—one that actively challenges stigma and corrects misconceptions, especially for individuals who may feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or intimidated by the idea of seeking professional help.

The initiative will roll out across the DMV region through Columbia Mental Health's neighborhood-based clinics. By debunking persistent myths head-on, the campaign aims to break down stigma and make mental health support feel more approachable, relatable, and attainable.

"At Columbia Mental Health, our mission has always been centered around making high-quality mental health care accessible, stigma-free, and rooted in the communities we serve," said Dr. Ryan Wakim, Chief Medical Officer at Columbia Mental Health. "We know from our clinical experience that many local people, including some of our own families, friends and neighbors, still suffer silently — not because they don't need help, but because they've internalized harmful myths about what mental health care entails. Whether it's worries about cost, fear of being judged, or simply not knowing where to start, these misconceptions create unnecessary barriers to care. Our hope with this campaign is to dismantle those barriers and make it clear that help is available, affordable, effective and right here in our own communities."

The campaign will confront several of the most common myths that discourage individuals from accessing care:

  • Myth: Mental health care is too expensive or insurance won't cover it. Columbia Mental Health accepts numerous major insurance plans, making care financially accessible for many of DMV's residents.
  • Myth: Finding the right therapist or psychiatrist is too difficult. With a diverse provider base and streamlined intake process, Columbia Mental Health helps match clients with appropriate care providers who meet their specific needs and that they deserve.
  • Myth: Wait times are too long. In contrast to industry standards, Columbia Mental Health offers remarkably quick appointment scheduling and open, near-term availability at many of the brand's clinics.
  • Myth: Medication is the only treatment option. Columbia Mental Health offers comprehensive approaches including therapy, medication management, and in some locations, interventional treatments like TMS and Spravato for treatment-resistant depression.
  • Myth: Mental health care requires too much time. Flexible scheduling options, including evening and week end appointments and telehealth services, make treatment more accessible for busy individuals.

"At the heart of this campaign is a simple message: mental health care is essential care," added Dr. Wakim. "Whether someone is navigating everyday stress or more complex mental health needs, support is available. We are proud to offer innovative and life-changing interventional psychiatry and therapy services at Columbia Mental Health, including NeuroStar's TMS therapy—a safe, effective, non-drug treatment for major depression—along with Spravato, to meet individuals wherever they are on their mental health journey."

The "Myths vs. Facts" campaign debuts this month across a range of digital platforms, aiming to reach individuals who could benefit from professional care but have felt uncertain or discouraged about seeking it.
