FM Cho says China's Xi expected to visit S. Korea for APEC summit

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said Wednesday he understands Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit South Korea next month for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, and that he plans to discuss it when he meets his Chinese counterpart in Beijing later in the day. Cho made the remarks shortly before leaving for Beijing to hold talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the first such top-level diplomatic talks between the two countries since the launch of the Lee Jae Myung government in early June. The talks will be followed by a working dinner. "From what I understand, President Xi will visit South Korea for the APEC summit," Cho told reporters at Gimpo International Airport. "We will have detailed discussions in relation to the matter." Cho's two-day trip comes as South Korea seeks to balance relations with Beijing amid a deepening U.S.-China rivalry, while maintaining strong ties with its sole ally, the United States, and the trilateral partnership with Washington and Tokyo.
