Jiangsu's Largest Behind-the-Meter Energy Storage Project Now Online
TAIZHOU, China, Sept. 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A major behind-the-meter energy storage facility, developed by Jingjiang Taifu New Energy, has entered commercial service in Taizhou, Jiangsu Province. With a rated output of 120 MW and a storage capacity of 240 MWh, the Jingjiang Special Steel project is now the largest customer-sited installation of its kind in Jiangsu.
The project addresses the pressing need for decarbonization in steel manufacturing and other energy-intensive sectors. By enabling greater on-site use of renewable energy, the system is projected to integrate up to 168 million kilowatt-hours of wind and solar power annually. This will displace approximately 20,700 metric tons of coal equivalent and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 51,500 metric tons per year. In addition to supporting the plant's clean energy transition, the facility will enhance local grid reliability. It can deliver 120 MW of frequency and peak-shaving support during periods of high demand, including summer peaks. The deployment of grid-forming inverter technology enables flexible operation and rapid response, further strengthening the stability of the power system.
Since the beginning of this year, State Grid Taizhou Power Supply Company, working in coordination with the Marketing Service Center of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power, has applied a distribution and storage potential assessment model to identify large industrial customers for whom energy storage offers significant economic value. Through proactive engagement with industrial parks and businesses, the team provided customized energy usage analysis and end-to-end support, ensuring the project's successful grid integration. As a result, Taizhou's total operational capacity of behind-the-meter storage has now surpassed 220 MW.
The project is integrated with the Urban Energy Storage Cloud Platform, developed by State Grid Taizhou Power Supply Company, which enables intelligent monitoring, dispatch, and control. Since its launch in April 2025, the platform has connected 42 storage assets, with a combined capacity of 188 MW, significantly improving operational visibility and system management.
The Jingjiang Special Steel facility also serves as a flagship demonstration project in State Grid Taizhou Power Supply Company's broader initiative to explore coordinated operation of "energy storage + distributed energy" and build cleaner, more efficient microgrids. By expanding the capacity for renewable energy integration, the project supports the shift toward a smarter, more sustainable regional energy system.
