KANSAS TEEN WINS NATIONAL VIDEO CONTEST WITH MESSAGE TO CONVINCE DRIVERS TO SHARE THE ROAD SAFELY
Winner of National Road Safety Foundation's Drive2Life PSA Contest Gets $2,000 Prize, Will Work with Emmy-Winning Producer to Create Video that will Air on TV Nationwide
NEW YORK, May 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A teen from Tonganoxie, KS has won the National Road Safety Foundation's 16th annual Drive2Life PSA Contest, which asked teens nationwide for ideas for a TV public service announcement reminding drivers to safely share the road with other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
Huston Albert, 18, a senior at Tonganoxie High School in Tonganoxie, KS, won the $2,000 top prize from nearly 200 entries received. His teacher at the school is Heather DeMaranville. Judging was done by a blue-ribbon panel of driver education teachers from the American Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA).
As part of his prize, Albert will travel to New York to work with an Emmy Award-winning producer to turn his idea into a PSA that will air nationwide on more than 160 TV stations on the nationally-syndicated program "Teen Kids News."
Albert's public service announcement script, titled "We All Have a Place," shows children playing with toy cars, showing patience and courtesy to others in the driving space. The narrator says, "On the road we must always stay alert. Be responsible and ready so no one gets hurt. Cars and walkers can be happy side by side, as long as you respect each other whenever you walk or ride."
The next scene shows a mix of traffic with families and children inside, as the narrator adds, "Give everyone their space, because on the road we all have a place. Slow down, be considerate, treat each other right. Sharing the road is important every day and night."
Two runners-up were also selected and received $500. They are Kamille Cockrall, 16, of George Bush High School in Houston, TX, and Ari Greenberg, 16, of Fargo High School in Fargo, ND. The teachers of the winner and runners-up each receive a $100 gift card.
"We believe Huston's message will resonate with people of all ages to be aware of other road users and to drive responsibly by always sharing the road," said Michelle Anderson of the National Road Safety Foundation.
The contest was conducted in partnership with the American Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association, which represents driver education teachers and instructors nationally.
The winning video will be viewable at www.nrsf.org/contests/drive2life. The site also has free resources that teachers and parents can use to talk with teens about how to speak up for safety.
