The National Assembly on Friday passed a government reorganization bill to dismantle the prosecution and restructure various government branches, including the finance ministry. The revision to the Government Organization Act, pushed by the ruling Democratic Party (DP), passed with 174 votes in favor, one in opposition and five abstentions during a plenary session boycotted by the main opposition People Power Party (PPP). The bill, the first of its kind under the Lee Jae Myung administration, centers on abolishing the prosecution office and establishing two new agencies to take on its investigative and indictment powers. The so-called serious crimes investigation agency will be installed under the interior ministry, while the indictment office will be established under the justice ministry. As the bill outlines a one-year grace period for the abolishment, the prosecution office will shut down next year, 78 years after it was established in 1948.
