Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning says it's important for homeowners to recognize the early warning signs of a failing AC unit

BROOKLYN, N.Y., July 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The cooling experts at Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning, a family-owned home service company serving Brooklyn and Manhattan since 1906, say that homeowners should know how to recognize when their air conditioning unit needs immediate attention so they aren't stuck without cold air during a deadly heat wave.

Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning says it’s important for homeowners to recognize the early warning signs of a failing air conditioning unit and is providing troubleshooting tips.

"In late June, we saw several days that pushed upward toward the 100-degree mark, and we're certain to have more heat waves this summer," said Michael Petri, owner of Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning. "Most people know that heat can be deadly, particularly to seniors and small children, so it's important that homeowners recognize the symptoms of a failing air conditioner unit."

A heat wave, created by a massive heat dome, held New York City and other cities across the Northeast captive the week of June 23. Temperatures reached as high as 103 degrees in some parts of the region, and cities like New York activated their heat emergency plans for the first time this year.

Petri said that when the mercury rises that high, residential AC units have to work twice as hard to keep homes cool and are more prone to breaking down under these extreme circumstances. He said homeowners should recognize the following signs to determine if their AC unit is failing:

  • Frequent cycling. If the AC unit is turning off and on frequently, even when there isn't a drastic temperature change, it may be a sign that the unit is experiencing critical failure. Short cycling can be caused by dirty or clogged filters and evaporator coils, but it could also be a sign that the system is low on refrigerant or has a faulty thermostat.
  • Higher energy bills. If the AC unit is working harder but cooling less for more money, it could be a sign that it is losing efficiency because of low refrigerant, airflow issues or is simply coming to the end of its life cycle.
  • Loud or unusual noises. An air conditioner should make some noise, such as the whirring of the fans, but if the system is grinding, rattling or squealing, it needs immediate attention from an HVAC professional. This could be a sign of worn parts or even a motor issue.
  • Uneven temperatures. When some rooms stay cooler than others, it could indicate that the system has dirty components or leaky ducts. It could also mean that the HVAC unit's size is inadequate for the size of the home.
  • Age: Everything ages, including air conditioning units. If the system is more than 10 years old and is experiencing a decline in performance and efficiency, it may simply be time to replace it.
  • Petri said homeowners should have their AC unit inspected annually to ensure they stay on top of potential issues that could cause breakdowns during the hottest days of summer.

"When the heat is high, the last thing you want is to have your air conditioner break down," he said. "Making sure your AC is running at its most efficient is not only necessary to stay comfortable and reduce costs during summer, it could save your life."
