Population mobility falls for 3rd straight month in May

The number of Koreans relocating to new residences declined for the third consecutive month in May, government data showed Wednesday, as the country's aging population and a prolonged slump in the housing market continued to dampen domestic mobility. According to the data compiled by Statistics Korea, approximately 473,000 people changed residences last month, down 4.9 percent from a year earlier. The figure has been on a steady downward trend since March. The population mobility rate, which refers to the percentage of people relocating per 100 residents, also dropped 0.6 percentage point from a year earlier to 10.9 percent. This marks the lowest rate for any May since the statistics agency began compiling relevant data in 2000. The agency attributed the continued decline in population movement to the country's demographic shift toward an older population and subdued activity in the real estate market. By region, Seoul reported a net outflow of 3,657 residents in May.
