Safer, Innovative 3D Imaging for South Florida Children Available Only at Nicklaus Children's Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute
Miami's premier pediatric health system offering low-dose radiation to patients
MIAMI, July 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Providing a safer, innovative approach to digital imaging for children in Florida is a guiding principle to Nicklaus Children's Hospital's approach to enhancing care for families. The opening of the new state-of-the-art Nicklaus Children's Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute marks a huge milestone in enhancing diagnostic imaging for children.
Nicklaus Children's Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute is the only facility in the state of Florida to offer EOSedge imaging with low-dose radiation for pediatric patients. The state-of-the-art EOSedge imaging system creates full-body 3D images in a natural, standing position for patients with spine, hip, and leg disorders. This technology helps guide surgical processes and treatment plans by capturing a calibrated, full-body image in a weight-bearing position, enabling precise measurements of anatomical angles with minimized radiation exposure compared to traditional digital radiography.
In the pediatric population, the EOSedge system substantially reduces the radiation dose by an average of 80% compared to traditional digital radiography machines. This helps minimize potential long-term impact of radiation and offers significant benefits to patients requiring precise X-ray images to support diagnoses through post-surgical assessment.
"The new Nicklaus Children's Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute represents a significant leap forward in our commitment to providing world-class orthopedic care for children and adolescents," said Dr. Craig J. Spurdle, chief of orthopedic surgery at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. "As leaders in pediatric orthopedic care across the state, we are excited to welcome families to our newly expanded, state-of-the-art facility—designed to deliver transformative care for generations to come. This milestone marks our transition from the hospital's historic Variety wing to a modern space that supports our mission of delivering comprehensive, compassionate, and innovative treatment for a wide range of conditions, including spinal disorders, orthopedic oncology, limb deformities and length discrepancies, sports-related injuries, fractures, cerebral palsy, and neuromuscular disorders."
The opening of the Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute on the third floor of the George E. Batchelor Research and Academic Pavilion boasts 19,000 square feet and features expanded treatment areas designed with patient and family comfort in mind. The new location houses an imaging suite with an EOSedge imaging system, two x-ray machines, 18 exam rooms, cast rooms and meeting spaces.
Nicklaus Children's Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute is routinely ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and offers follow-up care and consultations in six locations throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties to serve patients close to home.
