Luo Yansong is competing in the UAV operation (plant-protection) event — under the "new occupation category" — in the 3rd Vocational Skills Competition of PRC (the Competition). The competitive events in this category, alongside other events, such as infant care, elderly care and nursing, as well as agricultural products and food inspection, have attracted wide public attention.

With a wider range of vocational categories, and more refined event settings, the Competition is in full swing, underscoring the steady rise of vocational and technical education in China.

In recent years, programs offered by Chinese technician schools have increasingly adapted to the needs of both domestic and international job markets. Talent cultivation has also grown more diverse and targeted. A prime example is the integration of industry and education: many technician schools now work closely with enterprises to jointly establish colleges and specialized programs, ensuring a seamless transition from training to employment. Another model is "bringing education into enterprises", where students receive hands-on training via programs built in cooperation with enterprises or R&D platforms. Statistics show that in 2023, graduates of technician schools accounted for 44.77% of all newly employed people in urban areas.

This year's competition highlighted two defining features of vocational skills development in China: advancing rapidly at the forefront of new technologies and emerging industries, while consolidating strength in areas most closely tied to people's daily lives.

The first feature is reflected in competition events related to new sectors, occupations and technologies, such as smart agricultural machinery intelligent vehicle software development, and UAV systems, which together account for more than half of the events. Take intelligent vehicle software development for instance: the competition tested multiple critical processes, from installation and calibration of key sensors to smart cockpit software development and AI model application. These events demand a high level of both theoretical knowledge and operational expertise from the participants.

The second feature is represented by livelihood-related events such as elderly care and nursing, infant care, health and social services. These directly address urgent social needs, such as population aging and the challenges of childcare, helping to ease pressing concerns and improve people's quality of life more efficiently. 

The national Vocational Skills Competition is indeed a proving ground for future industries, and a testing ground for high-skilled workers on various fronts. It is a microcosm of the new era of technical education for skilled workers in China, which is bearing richer fruits that will drive global development.
