THE AUSTIN-SAN ANTONIO MEGAREGION BOOK TO LAUNCH
SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A book launch will be held for "The Austin-San Antonio Megaregion: Opportunity and Challenge in the Lone Star State" on October 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. CT at the Central Library at 600 Soledad Street in San Antonio, TX. The event will feature the book co-authors, former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros, Robert Rivard and David Hendricks.
Published by Texas A&M University Press, the forward-looking book examines the rapid growth of the Austin and San Antonio metropolitan areas that covers 13 Texas counties. Population growth in and between the large cities has accelerated significantly in recent decades, forming a single, cohesive urban center of more than 5.2 million people, from Pflugerville to Floresville. The current population combined within all 13 counties is larger than the entire population of Louisiana and is larger than each of 25 states in the nation. If the two metro areas were viewed as a single metro, it would be the 10th largest in population in the nation.
At the current residential growth rates, the megaregion is projected to reach populations of 8.3 million by 2050 and 9.6 million people by 2060. It is imperative, according to the co-authors, that local government and business leaders coordinate planning to accommodate the inevitable future population growth by paying attention to rising demands for housing, airport capacity, water, energy and highway and rail transportation. The book also argues the megaregion is underrepresented in professional sports franchises and should be prepared to compete for coming opportunities in pro football, baseball and other major league teams.
