Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being applied across industries, and is often seen as a surefire way to generate profit. Simply attaching the term AI to a product can create the illusion of inevitable success. Yet there is one field where AI has struggled to deliver on its promise: music composition. AI-driven music composition services initially raised hopes that costly, copyright-protected works could be replaced with low-cost alternatives for use in videos or advertisements. The expectation was that companies could cut expenses while still producing engaging content. In reality, however, the results have been disappointing — ironically because of copyright. In Korea, as well as in the United States and Europe, AI-generated works are not recognized as eligible for copyright protection. Current copyright laws only acknowledge creations made by humans. Without copyright protection, AI music cannot generate revenue, since anyone can freely use it without payment.
