Two new regional profiles of 1EdTech standards highlight the power and flexibility of open, trusted and global interoperability standards.

BURLINGTON, Mass., Sept. 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- 1EdTech, the trusted member-driven collaborative for open, edtech interoperability standards, today announced the release of two new country-specific profiles that highlight the global flexibility and power of standards created with the world in mind.

Funded by their respective governments, the German profile of Resource Search 1.0 and the Norwegian profile of OneRoster® 1.2 demonstrate how national ministries can make it easier for edtech providers and educational institutions to meet their requirements while also benefiting from a consistent, standards-based approach to education technology that reduces cost and complexity.

Resource Search 1.0: German Profile

The Resource Search 1.0 specification allows teachers and students to search for digital learning resources across multiple providers. The new German Profile adapts this capability to align with Germany's education system, making adjustments to support:

  • National school structures
  • The German grade system
  • The use of specific learning resource types

This ensures that digital learning resources can be discovered and accessed in ways that reflect how the German education system works, while maintaining global alignment.

OneRoster 1.2: Norwegian Profile

The OneRoster 1.2 specification enables the secure exchange of data about students, teachers, courses, and enrollments across systems. The Norwegian Profile for K-12 education ecosystems in Norway provides a standard implementation tailored to local needs, including:

  • Daycare and afterschool programs
  • Group structures unique to Norwegian schools
  • Removal of features that apply only to U.S. and North American contexts

Using this profile, Norway ensures that all institutions and providers adopt a consistent, standards-based approach to data exchange, reducing integration barriers and enhancing long-term sustainability.

Proving the Global Model for Edtech

These new profiles provide a blueprint for how governments around the world can codify their requirements using interoperability standards without creating isolated, one-off systems. By combining local customization with global consistency, 1EdTech members ensure that digital learning technologies can scale across borders, benefiting governments, edtech providers, schools, and, most importantly, learners.

"Many times, the original standard will work across borders," said Curtiss Barnes, 1EdTech CEO. "And we account for the regulatory and operating norms in each country by providing for a national profile. When the original standard doesn't meet specific needs, we can make adjustments to fill those requirements while still allowing the core standard to drive more than 90% of the value. That means no matter what profile a tool certifies to, it will be easier to adjust when serving teaching and learning in other countries."

Edtech providers and educational institutions across Europe, including leaders of these and other national projects, will gather at Learning Impact Europe from 22 to 24 September 2025 in Delft, Netherlands, to explore the latest edtech trends and more ways to build an open, trusted and interoperable digital learning ecosystem.
