Angels for Change Selects Fagron Sterile Services US for 2025 Project PROTECT Grant to Produce Sterile Water for Injection
WICHITA, Kan., May 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Angels for Change today announced that Fagron Sterile Services US (FSS) has been awarded a 2025 Project PROTECT grant to produce sterile water for injection (SWIFI), a critical component in the preparation of injectable medications.
Following the widespread disruptions caused by hurricane Helene and Milton in 2024, SWFI shortages impacted patient care across the country. This collaboration aims to bolster emergency preparedness and ensure continuity of care during future disruptions.
"We must be ready to activate onshore supply of life-saving medicines vulnerable to shortage," said Laura Bray, founder of Angels for Change. "Project PROTECT creates a network of trusted manufacturers ready to supply the American people during a crisis. We're grateful for Fagron's continued partnership and commitment to patient care."
Fagron will use the grant to make targeted capital investments, enabling immediate production and distribution of SWFI. This move represents a transformative shift in how the U.S. proactively protects patient access during emergencies.
A Bold, Predictive Approach to Shortage Mitigation
Launched in 2022, Project PROTECT a national program funds 503B outsourcing facilities to proactively manufacture medications at risk of going on shortage, based on predictive data. The initiative has already helped ensure over 750,000 patient treatments during three major national shortages and was named one of CNN's top healthcare stories of 2023.
"We're proud to once again partner with Angels for Change through Project PROTECT to help safeguard access to essential medicines. Sterile Water for Injection is foundational to hospital care, and shortages can have real consequences for patients. This grant allows us to act quickly and meaningfully in support of healthcare providers nationwide. It's an honor to be trusted with this responsibility—for the second time—and we remain deeply committed to being part of the solution," said Ray Dixon, SVP, Commercial Operations, Fagron Sterile Services US.
