‘Constructive’ mood for tariff talks raises hope for carmakers

With stalled tariff talks between Korea and the United States taking a turn for what top bureaucrats called a “constructive” mood, Hyundai Motor and General Motors (GM) Korea see an end in sight to their months-long U.S. tariff pressure. The outlook came as multiple top-ranking government officials voiced optimism for the trade negotiations with the world’s largest economy in their latest visit to Washington. Presidential chief of staff for policy Kim Yong-beom said Thursday (local time in Washington) that both countries are “in the phase of holding negotiations under the most serious and constructive atmosphere,” after arriving in the U.S. Last week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also expressed hopes for Korea and the U.S. to resolve their differences “in the next 10 days,” hinting at the possibility that both countries will clinch a detailed trade agreement soon. Korea and the U.S. have been locked in a trade stalemate since July 30 when they agreed to a broad tariff agreement.
