Ex-justice minister appears for special counsel questioning in martial law probe

Former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae appeared before a special counsel team Wednesday to undergo questioning over allegations he abetted former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed imposition of martial law. Park was summoned to special counsel Cho Eun-suk's office to be questioned as a suspect amid allegations he ordered the prosecution to consider sending a prosecutor to a joint investigation headquarters set up under the now dismantled martial law command. Park was found to have had three phone calls with then Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung late on Dec. 3 after Yoon declared martial law and early the next day. The former justice minister is also suspected of ordering the Korea Immigration Service to put a team on standby to impose travel bans on people arrested under martial law, and directing the Korea Correctional Service to secure space to incarcerate politicians and others.
