Former US vice president Dick Cheney dies at age 84
Dick Cheney, who was vice president during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, has died at the age of 84, U.S. media reported on Tuesday, citing a statement from his family. Cheney died Monday night due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to the statement. The Republican who served under president George W Bush was widely regarded as one of the most powerful vice presidents in U.S. history. Cheney, known for his serious demeanour, was credited by many with pulling the strings behind the scenes to make the case for the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. He was a Washington veteran long before becoming vice president, having served as White House chief of staff under president Gerald Ford, then as a member of Congress from Wyoming, and later as secretary of defence under president George HW Bush. "Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing," the statement said.
