The state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) said Friday it has signed a deal with U.S.-based energy firm ConverDyn to purchase converted uranium from the American company, as Korea and the U.S. seek to expand ties in the nuclear energy sector. ConverDyn is the only company in the U.S. that operates a commercial facility for converting refined uranium ore concentrate into uranium hexafluoride, which can then be used in the enrichment process, according to the Korean company. With the deal, the KHNP said it can now safely store and manage uranium resources in North America, while securing raw materials needed to produce enriched uranium in the U.S. Currently, Korea fully imports enriched uranium from foreign countries, such as France, Russia and Britain, as it is banned from nuclear reprocessing and uranium enrichment within the country under a nuclear energy pact with the U.S. "Through this contract, we expect not only to strengthen energy security by ensuring a stable supply of converted uranium, but also to further solidify nuclear cooperation between Korea and the United States,"Weiter zum vollständigen Artikel bei Korea Times
