PHNOM PENH — A chartered plane carrying about 60 South Koreans detained in Cambodia over online scam operations headed for Incheon on Saturday, amid growing concerns over criminal rings targeting nationals in the Southeast Asian country. The plane left Techo International Airport near Phnom Penh for Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, days after a South Korean government response team was dispatched to Cambodia to assist nationals implicated in online scams run by local crime organizations. A South Korean college student was recently reported to have been tortured and killed in Cambodia in August, a month after he was lured to the Southeast Asian country by a job scam. The case put a spotlight on the growing number of nationals lured to Cambodia with high-paying job offers and then forced to work in online scams targeting South Koreans, often under confinement and violence from crime rings.
