I received a call on Saturday from a Chinese journalist who had worked in Korea for five years. She was back for the first time in seven years to cover the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. During the COVID-19 pandemic she could not visit at all, so this trip meant more than an assignment. I hoped to see her, but she had no time to stop by Seoul. Over the phone, she said, “I hope this meeting in Gyeongju will help ease tensions between China and the United States.” I agreed. As journalists, we cannot ignore national interests. Yet journalism must always pursue the greater good — truth and the welfare of the broader community.
