"Fire prevention isn't just about having the right equipment—it's about creating habits and awareness that protect lives and property," said Bart Proctor, CEO of Pye-Barker. "Taking proactive steps to prevent fires and preparing for emergencies can make all the difference when seconds count."

As families and businesses assess their fire safety protocols, Pye-Barker offers key recommendations. First, install and maintain proper detection systems. Check smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year. Install alarms on every level of the building, and consider dual-sensor monitors for comprehensive protection. Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level, especially near bedrooms and fuel-burning appliances.

Prevent common fire hazards through simple daily practices. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from furniture and fabrics. Never overload outlets or power strips. Clean dryer vents regularly to prevent lint buildup fires and always blow out candles when leaving the room.

Homeowners and businesses should prepare for emergencies by equipping spaces with appropriate fire extinguishers. For homes, the National Fire Protection Association recommends a multi-purpose ABC fire extinguisher for ordinary combustibles (Class A), flammable liquids (Class B) and electrical fires (Class C). Place extinguishers on every level, especially in kitchens and near bedrooms.

For businesses, fire extinguisher needs may vary based on specific hazards. Commercial kitchens require Class K extinguishers designed specifically for cooking oils and fats, while facilities with combustible metals require Class D extinguishers. Extinguishers and sprinkler systems should be routinely tested and inspected. Pye-Barker can help assess unique business risks and recommend appropriate fire protection equipment.

With human error accounting for approximately 80% of all workplace fires, proper training and awareness are critical.
