The Invesco Biotechnology & Genome ETF (PBE) was launched on 06/23/2005, and is a smart beta exchange traded fund designed to offer broad exposure to the Health Care ETFs category of the market. What Are Smart Beta ETFs?Market cap weighted indexes were created to reflect the market, or a specific segment of the market, and the ETF industry has traditionally been dominated by products based on this strategy.Because market cap weighted indexes provide a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way of replicating market returns, they work well for investors who believe in market efficiency. However, some investors believe in the possibility of beating the market through exceptional stock selection, and choose a different type of fund that tracks non-cap weighted strategies: smart beta.By attempting to pick stocks that have a better chance of risk-return performance, non-cap weighted indexes are based on certain fundamental characteristics, or a combination of such.Even though this space provides many choices to investors--think one of the simplest methodologies like equal-weighting and more complicated ones like fundamental and volatility/momentum based weighting--not all have been able to deliver first-rate results.Fund Sponsor & IndexBecause the fund has amassed over $266.49 million, this makes it one of the average sized ETFs in the Health Care ETFs. PBE is managed by Invesco. PBE seeks to match the performance of the Dynamic Biotechnology & Genome Intellidex Index before fees and expenses. The Dynamic Biotech & Genome Intellidex Index seeks to provide capital appreciation by thoroughly evaluating companies based on a variety of investment merit criteria, including price momentum, earnings momentum, quality, management action, and value.Cost & Other ExpensesCost is an important factor in selecting the right ETF, and cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive cousins if all other fundamentals are the same.Operating expenses on an annual basis are 0.58% for PBE, making it on par with most peer products in the space.PBE's 12-month trailing dividend yield is 0.98%.Sector Exposure and Top HoldingsWhile ETFs offer diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk, a deep look into a fund's holdings is a valuable exercise. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.Representing 100% of the portfolio, the fund has heaviest allocation to the Healthcare sector.Looking at individual holdings, Illumina Inc (ILMN) accounts for about 5.45% of total assets, followed by Biogen Inc (BIIB) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (REGN).Its top 10 holdings account for approximately 46.83% of PBE's total assets under management.Performance and RiskSo far this year, PBE return is roughly 1.18%, and it's up approximately 21.56% in the last one year (as of 02/05/2026). During this past 52-week period, the fund has traded between $56.01 and $85.73.The ETF has a beta of 0.76 and standard deviation of 19.92% for the trailing three-year period, making it a high risk choice in the space. With about 33 holdings, it has more concentrated exposure than peers .AlternativesInvesco Biotechnology & Genome ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the Health Care ETFs segment of the market. However, there are other ETFs in the space which investors could consider.State Street SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) tracks S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index and the iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) tracks Nasdaq Biotechnology Index. State Street SPDR S&P Biotech ETF has $8.3 billion in assets, iShares Biotechnology ETF has $8.61 billion. XBI has an expense ratio of 0.35% and IBB changes 0.44%.Investors looking for cheaper and lower-risk options should consider traditional market cap weighted ETFs that aim to match the returns of the Health Care ETFsBottom LineTo learn more about this product and other ETFs, screen for products that match your investment objectives and read articles on latest developments in the ETF investing universe, please visit Zacks ETF Center.Boost Your Portfolio with Our Top ETF InsightsZacks' exclusive Fund Newsletter delivers actionable information, top news and analysis, as well as top-performing ETFs, straight to your inbox every week.Don’t miss out on this valuable resource.
