If you're interested in broad exposure to the Large Cap Growth segment of the US equity market, look no further than the First Trust NASDAQ-100 Ex-Technology Sector ETF (QQXT), a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on February 8, 2007.The fund is sponsored by First Trust Advisors. It has amassed assets over $1.10 billion, making it one of the average sized ETFs attempting to match the Large Cap Growth segment of the US equity market. Why Large Cap GrowthLarge cap companies typically have a market capitalization above $10 billion. Considered a more stable option, large cap companies boast more predictable cash flows and are less volatile than their mid and small cap counterparts. While growth stocks do boast higher than average sales and earnings growth rates, and they are expected to grow faster than the wider market, investors should note these kinds of stocks have higher valuations. Also, growth stocks are a type of equity that carries more risk compared to others. Even though growth stocks are more likely to outperform their value counterparts in strong bull markets, value stocks have a record of delivering better returns in almost all markets than growth stocks. CostsCost is an important factor in selecting the right ETF, and cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive counterparts if all other fundamentals are the same.Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.6%, making it one of the more expensive products in the space. It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 0.71%.Sector Exposure and Top HoldingsWhile ETFs offer diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk, a deep look into a fund's holdings is a valuable exercise. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis. This ETF has heaviest allocation to the Healthcare sector -- about 18.4% of the portfolio. Industrials and Consumer Discretionary round out the top three.Looking at individual holdings, Constellation Energy Corporation (CEG) accounts for about 2.19% of total assets, followed by The Trade Desk, Inc. (class A) (TTD) and Electronic Arts Inc. (EA).The top 10 holdings account for about 20.02% of total assets under management.Performance and RiskQQXT seeks to match the performance of the NASDAQ-100 Ex-Tech Sector Index before fees and expenses. The NASDAQ-100 Ex-Tech Sector Index is an equal-weighted index based on the securities of the NASDAQ-100 Index that are not classified as technology and, as a result, is a subset of the NASDAQ-100 Index. The NASDAQ-100 Index includes 100 of the largest domestic and international non-financial companies listed on NASDAQ based on market capitalization. The ETF has added about 7.47% so far this year and is up about 6.65% in the last one year (as of 10/23/2025). In the past 52-week period, it has traded between $84.34 and $101.22.The ETF has a beta of 0.94 and standard deviation of 14.81% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. Thus, QQXT is a reasonable option for those seeking exposure to the Style Box - Large Cap Growth area of the market. Investors might also want to consider some other ETF options in the space. The Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG) and the Invesco QQQ (QQQ) track a similar index. While Vanguard Growth ETF has $195.12 billion in assets, Invesco QQQ has $391.32 billion. VUG has an expense ratio of 0.04% and QQQ charges 0.2%.Bottom-LinePassively managed ETFs are becoming increasingly popular with institutional as well as retail investors due to their low cost, transparency, flexibility and tax efficiency.
