Bill Gates meets Korean biz leaders to cooperate in SMR sector

Bill Gates, best known for co-founding Microsoft, ended his three-day visit to Korea on Friday following a series of meetings with business leaders here. After meeting Korean policymakers, including President Lee Jae Myung, in his capacity as the chairman of the Gates Foundation, one of the world's largest charity organizations, Gates attended a dinner hosted by SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won at the conglomerate's headquarters in Seoul on Thursday. SK Group said Chey and Gates discussed strategic cooperation for the development and commercialization of small modular reactor (SMR) technologies owned by TerraPower, the U.S. company founded in 2008 by the American entrepreneur. Gates chairs TerraPower's board, while SK is the SMR company's second-largest shareholder through a $250 million investment in 2022. "I believe Korea and SK will be able to play key roles in commercializing TerraPower's SMRs," Chey said at the dinner. "Building on the safety, efficiency and eco-friendliness of SMR technology, we should work together so that the market embraces this innovation."
